It was once seen as a sleepy Queensland town, but recently Townsville has been drawing in more visitors. And now, with Unleashed Island Fest kicking off in February, you’ve got more reason than ever before to go to this piece of paradise.

Magnetic Island

Off the coast of Townsville in the Coral Sea is the beautiful and postcard perfect Magnetic Island. Not only is the festival happening on the pristine island, but it’s also great to visit when there isn’t a pumping party. From sandy beaches and fringing coral reefs, Magnetic Island is surrounded by endless sunshine. Drink a beer on the beach there and keep an eye out for koalas, they love exploring the island just as much as you do.

Palm Island

It might be known as Palm Island but it is actually sixteen islands that make it up. 60 kilometres north of Townsville is the beautiful set of islands.

But the interesting part of Palm Island and why it’s so great to see is because it used to be inaccessible. It was once just for the Indigenous community that inhabited the area. It has a rough but interesting history. But it is now accessible and is a beautiful place to go to as a tourist. With pristine beaches and amazing snorkelling and exploring, the locals are welcoming of people visiting their home.

Flinders Street

Getting peckish? It’s time to hit Flinders Street. From the American fare of The Balcony Hotel to the high-class steaks and meals at Shaw & Co., the locals of Townsville have been working hard to make it a destination for foodies. Flinders street is rife with tasty morsels and spectacular treats.

The weather is always beautiful in Townsville so take an outdoor table and enjoy the tropical heat paired with an ice cold drink.

Townsville Brewery

It might be neighbours with Bundaberg and be a city of rum, Townsville Brewery is serving the locals something a little crafty. The craft beer brewery may have felt like a fish out of water to begin with, but as more city slickers make their way to the coastal paradise, they’ve brought the bonuses with them. And one of those is tasty artisan craft beers. Townsville Brewery is not to be missed.
